As the largest seafood consumer in Europe, Spain is looking to drive down its reliance on imports and increase its own aquaculture production. As part of the push, the northern Spanish regions of Galicia and Murcia will be represented at this summer’s AquaNor exhibition, in the hope that Norwegian tech might partner in Spain’s new fish farming future.

IntraFish Aquaculture caught up with Director of ‘Invest in Spain’ (ICEX), José María Blasco, on the development of Spain’s aquaculture sector.

Spain is already the biggest aquaculture producer in the EU, accounting for around 20 percent of overall aquaculture production, or about 270,000 tons, but this is largely down to high volumes of blue mussels.
