LYONS Seafoods, the English-based processor and marketer, is processing Penaeus vannamei from what it says is the world's only organic shrimp farm.
The shrimp are being grown in Ecuador under an exclusive agreement with the Warminster, Wiltshire, based company. They have already been ordered by UK supermarket chain Sainsbury's.
Lyons has spent three years developing the project, but a spokesperson at the company would not reveal the name of the farm or its location in the country.
The farmer is said to have spent years developing his own organic feed, and the whole farm has been certified by German organic certification authority Naturland, which is accredited by IFOAM (International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movement).
