The effect of a new aquaculture project on a burgeoning sea lion colony in Stewart Island is being looked into by New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries, reports Stuff.co.nz.

In New Zealand sea lions are ranked as "nationally critical" on the threatened species list, with a population of about 10,000 in Otago, Southland and New Zealand's sub-antarctic islands.
