Not only will the population reach 8 billion in 2030, the global per capita GDP will also increase. In order to meet the demand for aquatic food from this growing wealthier population, we will have to double aquaculture production. But is this an achievable goal?

Over the past years, aquaculture sector growth has been declining and if we do not embark on a serious concerted effort to reverse this trend, the above question will remain unanswered. And even if we make that effort to increase growth, there are several major constraints, with the issue of feeding the growing aquaculture industry perhaps ranking highest.

During the last 15 years global fishmeal and fish-oil production from marine capture fisheries decreased at annual average rates of 1.7
