Marine Harvest is backing the Hero x's F3 Fish-Free Feed Challenge and will trial the product developed by the winner of the contest.
Feed companies Alpha Feed, Guangdong Yuehai Feed Group and Dainichi also announced their interest to trial the fish-free feed products.
“This is the first time that so many large established companies have committed to offering fish-free feed trials,” said Kevin Fitzsimmons, professor at the University of Arizona and former president of the World Aquaculture Society.
Marine Harvest will use the product if the winner feed is appropriate for feeding Atlantic salmon, the company said.
