A new Spanish bass and bream hatchery has been so successful that it already has a surplus of juveniles. RICHARD PRICKETT, who helped realise the project, explains its workings

SPAIN'S sunny Mediterranean island of Mallorca is usually associated with holiday sun rather than fish farming, but just 5km from the centre of the capital city Palma, Aquicultura Balear SA (ABSA) has produced its first seabream and seabass juveniles.

ABSA was founded by the region's electricity provider GESA. Together with Norwaybased Marine Farms' Spanish subsidiary, Culmarex SA, and another ongrower, a new state-of-the-art hatchery and nursery were built at GESA's derelict power station site between Palma and the airport.
