AQUATIC Eco-Systems Inc and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington are working together to determine the proper methods for operation and the limitations of an intensive rotifer recirculating system using condensed microalgae.

Brachionus rotundiformis , the marine rotifer, widely used in hatcheries as the first food item offered to marine finfish larvae, is traditionally grown by batch culture. But this is a labour-intensive method that utilises multiple culture vessels and timed harvests to achieve relatively stable supplies.

Intensive recirculating rotifer culture systems, through the process of water renovation, can potentially allow rotifers to be continuously cultured at very high densities in a single vessel - thus reducing space and labour requirements, while consistently producing large, harvestable quantities of rotifers.
