ISRAELI aquaculture scientists are developing commercial saltwater aquaponics that could become part of urban food production, reports GEOFF WILSON.
Up until now, most aquaponic development has used freshwater. Often freshwater finfish waste is used to grow herbs or lettuce.
One of the attractions of aquaponics is that two or more food enterprises use the same infrastructure but provide multiple revenues for the freshwater grower.
The technique has been named "aquaponics" because it merges hydroponic growing of plants with aquaculture.
In the best freshwater aquaponics the waste becomes the raw material of the organic hydroponics - with all waste being consumed, and most of the water being recycled.
