Although fish farming has been around for thousands of years, it is only in the last forty years that rapid developments have been made in production techniques, feed technology and genetics, thereby putting aquaculture firmly on the map. Total global production of cultured organisms was less than 5 million metric tons in 1970, but today stands at well over 50 million.

It is perhaps in the field of genetics where the most significant advancements have been and will be made in the future, as scientists learn more about how to improve growth rates and disease resistance.
