IDENTIFICATION gill tags have been made for the past 20 years by Ketchum Manufacturing Inc. of Ottawa, Canada.
"Ketchum fish tags (gill tags) are made from a food grade PVC that is of high quality and extremely durable, " the company's Christian Joly tells FFI .
"Tags can be attached to the gill plate or the tail of fish. These tags are used for many reasons: grade identification, traceability, brand loyalty, product quality, product species, freshness dating and health inspection.
"PVC gill tags are often bar coded and/or consecutively numbered for birth to plate traceability reasons."
