Förde Garnelen -- a land-based shrimp farming venture located on Germany's Baltic Coast -- is looking to expand its farm from pilot to commercial scale next year.

The company is currently getting all the necessary permits and is hoping to kick off construction in mid-2018, Bert Wecker, general manager of Förde Garnelen and associated equipment supplier Neomar, said during an online press conference hosted by the organizers of the Fish International show in Bremen.

The pilot facility, located in Strande, close to Kiel, currently produces 5 metric tons of vannamei shrimp annually and was set up to "test out the market," he said.
