Researchers at Nofima hope, through a process of breeding, to develop a strain of salmon that can be resistant to several known salmon diseases.
They have also confirmed Salmobreed’s find of genetic markers against PD (pancreas disease).
“We’ve gathered a lot of data on PD, and we’ll use the material to find the gene or genes behind PD. We want to find out if these genes are involved in the immune system and possibly affect other diseases. That can provide us with knowledge that enables more effective breeding for good health overall,” said Nofima Researcher Matthew Baranski.
