The Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program earlier this month updated several of its recommendations, including updates for scallops and tilapia.
The NGO upgraded farmed tilapia (Oreochromis spp.) from Colombia from 'Avoid' to a 'Good Alternative.'
"More than half of Colombia's tilapia that's exported to the US is produced in the Betania Reservoir," Seafood Watch wrote in its report supporting the ratings upgrade. "While overall data collection and management of environmental impacts needs improvement in Colombia, audit information from three large farms shows that antibiotics have not been used in recent production cycles."
