SABLEFISH (Anaplopoma fimbria), also known as black cod and butterfish, is an important groundfish species in British Columbia, with a wild harvest in 2005 of 4400 tonnes, worth C$29 million (US$25.5 million) at wholesale value, reports NICKI HOLMYARD.

This harvest has grown to meet consumer demand, and sablefish, with its firm white flesh and high oil content, has become one of the most sought after premium products in Canada.

Its consumer appeal has also made it a prime candidate for aquaculture and over the past decade, considerable R & D has gone into solving the issues related to breeding, hatching, first feeding and successful juvenile and adult production.
