VANCOUVER Island, off Canada's west coast is home to many aquaculture operations and it is here, at Qualicum Beach, that Island Scallops operates its shellfish and marine fish hatcheries and research facility, reports NICKI HOLMYARD.

Island Scallops has been involved in processing and marketing since 1991, when it perfected a diseaseresistant scallop hybrid.

The 'Pacific Scallop' was achieved by crossing the Japanese scallop with the local weathervane scallop.

Rob Saunders, president of Island Scallops, explains that as well as providing shellfish to customers in the US and Canada, his company has diversified into marine fish and 'new' shellfish species.
