As adults, ballan wrasse eat sea lice off of salmon skin, making them extremely valuable -- but as young, they are incredibly picky eaters, reported Phys.Org. They will only eat shrimp.

Researchers at Norway's Marine Harvest Labrus (MHL) have been working on farming wrasse for the past three years, and have found that the species do best with a high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet. The challenge, the site reported, is finding a low-cost adequate form of protein for the growing wrasse.

"They reject the commercially available feed alternatives," MHL's Espen Grotan said.
