Salmon farmer Nova Austral has 28 farming licenses located in the regions of Magallanes and the Antarctic. And this is its most valuable asset. For in the cold waters of the south, SRS is a distant problem.
Of the 28 farms, only 11 or 12 ever operate simultaneously: when the fish in one farm reaches harvesting weight, it is collected, processed and the farm fallowed for several months before being used again.
Nova Austral has opted to farm only Atlantic salmon, according to Nicos Nicolaides, CEO at the company, because ambient and water temperature conditions in the area are optimal for this species.
