ABALONE International Inc. - which had been producing farm-reared California red abalone in Crescent City, California, since 1988 - claims that the California Aquaculture Association (CAA) was intimately involved in the "betrayal" that resulted in the company's downfall.
"Horribly disappointing was the fact was that sitting on the Disease Advisory Committee that recommended a ban on shipments of abalone seed to our farm in 1998 and, later, the destruction of our stock, was a member of the CAA board, our treasurer, " says Chris Van Hook, Abalone International's owner.
