Walmart, the world’s largest retailer and an early and ardent supporter of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), is reviewing whether it will continue to solely use the MSC certification on its Alaska salmon products or allow use of the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute-backed FAO-based Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) certification developed with Global Trust, a company spokesperson told IntraFish on Wednesday.

“The equivalency of ASMI’s program is still under review. Walmart and Sam’s Clubs are currently only sourcing product from Alaska that was caught prior to the October expiration date of MSC,” the spokesperson told IntraFish.
