UK retailers and processors must fully commit to ending future purchases of all seafood products of Russian origin, the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) campaign group has said.

The call comes as the UK government announces a ban on exports to Russia of high-end luxury goods, while also hitting hundreds of key products with new import tariffs, including Russian whitefish.

While many UK supermarkets say they are reducing or ending the trade of some Russian products in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, the complexity of seafood supply chains means that UK consumers are still inadvertently buying huge quantities of Russian fish and supporting Putin devastating invasion, according to EJF.
