The Brazilian aquaculture industry is throwing its weight behind a bill being put before lawmakers that could help to double the South American nation's tilapia production.

Currently even a producer with a two-meter square pond requires an environmental license to produce tilapia. The license can cost at least $5,000 (€4,137), acting as a disincentive to produce or expand.

But a bill drafted by Senator Zequinha Marinho would scrap the requirement for small and medium-sized producers to obtain environmental licensing for their projects.
