Both South African and Namibian hake players alike are keeping their fingers crossed for the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) certification of the latter’s hake resources by the end of this year, a move that should give the sector a welcome boost.

The certification process for the Namibian fishery – which has a quota of around 154,000 metric tons -- has been in the works since 2017, and a decision was originally expected at the start of 2020.
