The Alaska pollock industry expects to benefit from a new US government initiative that will provide nearly $1 billion (€953 million) in additional funding to schools to support the purchase of American-grown foods for their meal programs.

On Thursday, the Biden administration announced it would provide the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) with the additional funding to schools to support the purchase of "American-grown" foods for their meal programs.

The new funding follows the signing of the Keep Kids Fed Act, which equips schools, summer meal sites and child care food programs with extra resources to enable them to continue serving children through the 2022/2023 school year.
