With concerns rife in Europe and the United Kingdom of possible sanctions being placed on Russian whitefish, major buyers and processors are sniffing out what alternative sources are available to meet their needs should the worst happen.

But so far, realistic alternatives seem to be scarce in terms of adequate volumes, especially for sectors such as the the massive European fish finger industry.

One of Europe's largest processors, Nomad Foods, the owner of the Birds Eye, Iglo and Findus frozen food brands, said recently it is finding ways to source fish outside of Russia, including other species such as hake and farmed whitefish as it seeks to reduce its strong dependence on Russian whitefish.
