Salmon Scotland, the trade body representing the country's salmon producers, fears the UK government is heading towards a trade war with the European Union, while ignoring the potential impacts on vital export businesses.

The prospect of a trade war with the European Union and tariffs on Scottish salmon moved a step closer on Tuesday after the UK government announced it is bringing forward legislation aimed at changing the Brexit protocol for Northern Ireland.

While in some ways the Scottish salmon sector saw the announcement as a ramping up of the UK government's position towards the European Union following Brexit, executives are concerned UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss did not mention exports from the UK to Europe during her statement to lawmakers announcing changes to the protocol.
