The Scottish government has stepped in to aid salmon farmers who have experienced massive financial losses after several days of deadlock at the UK-France border.

On Wednesday the country's Cabinet Secretary for Rural Economy and Tourism Fergus Ewing wrote the UK's Environment Secretary George Eustice, calling for the UK to prioritize "fresh and live seafood and day-old chicks."

“We need urgent support for businesses that stand to lose hundreds of thousands of pounds because they have missed Christmas delivery deadlines due to the closure of the ports or the products were ruined in transit," he said in the letter.
