The decision of leading Chilean and Faroese salmon producers to suspend shipments to Russia over its invasion of Ukraine is forcing Russian buyers to seek alternative sources to supply its consumer market.

Because of Russia's 2014 ban on much of the western world's seafood imports, direct salmon suppliers have been limited to the Faroes and Chile. All three companies farming salmon in the Faroes have committed to ending shipments to Russia, and Chilean salmon companies have begun dropping the market in large numbers.
