Norwegian aquaculture imports coming to Russia via trading bloc Belarus will no longer be allowed in the new year due to food safety concerns, the Russian agriculture agency Rosselkhoznadzor announced.

A ban will be in effect from Jan. 9, 2020, with Rosselkhoznadzor stating it is a result of previous products made from Norwegian raw material which did not meet the Eurasian Economic Union’s requirements for microbiological indicators. According to the agency, the products also included traces of drugs.

The release also cited “the lack of consent” for the Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance Service (Mattelsynet) to inspect Norwegian aquaculture enterprises which resulted in the ban.
