Vietnam, the third-largest exporter of whitefish to the Russian market, is suffering the effects of European sanctions on Russia following that country's invasion of neighboring Ukraine.

In 2021, Vietnam was one of the three largest suppliers of whitefish -- primarily pangasius -- to Russia, after China and Argentina.

It exported $32.5 million (€29.9 million) worth of the product to the country, up almost 73 percent from 2020.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a positive impact, causing a sharp increase in demand for frozen pangasius fillets in the market.
