Scottish salmon will likely be a major target for any potential EU retaliatory tariffs, as the Northern Ireland protocol portion of the EU-UK trade and cooperation agreement (TCA) moves closer to breaking down, less than 10 months after being agreed to, a leading Cambridge University EU law professor told IntraFish.

Like Scotch whiskey, tariffs on Scottish salmon are likely to strike a nerve between governments and communities in England and Scotland, particularly as the Scottish fishing industry has taken a battering since the United Kingdom left the EU at the end of 2020, said Catherine Barnard.
