Mitsui-owned land-based trout farm says it is ready for commercial production of its fast-growing fish

It has taken Mitsui-owned FRD Japan the last five years of pilot farming to reach a point at which it is ready to commercialize its land-based trout production.

But now, 25 generations of rainbow trout down the line, the company finally has "really fast" growth, low mortality and low feed conversion ratios across its trial facilities. "In short, we have now met most of our KPIs," FRD co-CEO Tez Sogo told IntraFish.

The fast growth Sogo speaks of is fish reaching an average size of 3 kilos in just over a year, almost half the growth cycle of traditionally-farmed Atlantic salmon, which generally reach around 4.5
