The Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) new version of its fisheries standard, which was recently given the green light by its board, is raising requirements for fisheries to ensure the sustainability certification carries adequate weight.

The new version of the standard will be published in October, and fisheries entering assessment for the first time will apply to the new standard beginning in May 2023.

Some fisheries have raised concerns because the new standards require certain improvements, including stronger fisheries management and better protections for marine life.
