Norwegian cod suppliers have lost customers in major markets following the loss of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification of Norway's inshore cod fishery, but the boom in demand has more than offset the decline.

Morten Jensen, CEO of Insula-owned Norwegian whitefish supplier Nordic Group, said his company, which mainly buys its cod from the inshore fleet, has lost customers in major markets such as Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Sweden, where buyers place high value on eco-labels.

“The disappearance of MSC has cost us money, and it has cost the fishermen money,” Jensen told IntraFish at the recent Seafood Expo Global in Barcelona, Spain.
