The biggest challenge in the sustainability space for global salmon giant Cermaq is reducing the sector's environmental footprint and addressing climate change, Cermaq's Global Head of Sustainability and Risk Wenche Gronbrekk told IntraFish.

Other issues, including nutrition, biodiversity and human rights, are also areas salmon farmers could make a difference.

The food sector currently accounts for 25 percent of global greenhouse emissions, with a large amount of research pointing to the need to shift from land production to sea, Gronbrekk said.
