Faroese salmon farmer Bakkafrost has signed a contract with MEST Shipyard for the construction of its first fully electric workboat as part of its goal to cut its greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030.

The workboat is solely based on electric power from batteries and is expected to be completed in December 2021.

Faroese energy company SEV will also participate in the project by providing a charging system.

“At Bakkafrost we have a goal to reduce our GHG-emissions by 50 percent by 2030,” said Regin Jacobsen, CEO of Bakkafrost.

“Ships and boats play an important role in the Faroe Islands, and it is also in this sector that we find the biggest potential to reduce the overall Faroese GHG-emissions.”
