The Maritime Canada inshore lobster trap fishery is one step closer to being re-certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).

On Feb. 1, third-party certifier Global Trust Certification determined in a final report the fishery should be re-certified.

The certification would mean the approval for two different areas that are part of the fishery: the Bay of Fundy, Scotian Shelf and Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence lobster trap in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick; and the Prince Edward Island lobster trap fishery.

Canada's Bay of Fundy lobster fishery is Canada's most valuable — worth about $1.3 billion (€1 billion) — with the lion's share caught in southwestern Nova Scotia, according to the CBC.

There now follows a period of 15 United Kingdom working days during which eligible parties may file objections to the report that must be submitted by Feb 22.

The fishery will not be re-certified until the objection period ends and either no objections have been filed or the objections procedure has concluded.
