Ecuador's shrimp producers posted a 24 percent increase in global exports in 2021 despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and fallout from the worldwide shipping container crisis.

The country shipped 1.86 billion pounds -- worth over $5 billion (€4.4 billion) -- up from 1.49 billion pounds in 2020.

Although China remains by far the South American nation's largest export market, shipments to the United States climbed 56 percent to 406 million pounds.

Ecuador's exports to Europe, its second largest market, rose 28 percent to 419 million pounds.
