Wyoming-based Aquabanq recently broke ground in West Virginia for what the company is describing as a multimillion-dollar, land-based recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) shrimp farm.

"West Virginia welcomed us," AJ Shapiro, CEO of Aquabanq, told IntraFish of its June groundbreaking event that featured several local, state and federal officials. "I was surprised by this support in positivity."

That experience is in contrast to the company's first attempt to farm salmon in land-based facilities in rural, Maine. It abandoned that effort a couple years ago and pivoted to RAS shrimp farming, choosing to set up operations in West Virginia.
