The Brazilian farmed shrimp industry is aiming to expand production by 25 percent to 150,000 metric tons in 2021 as a surge in growth over recent years continues.

Production figures for 2020 are not yet in but Itamar Rocha, president of producers trade body ABCC put the total around 120,000 metric tons, the industry's target for last year.

The latest increase means production rocketed 33 percent on top of a 17 percent rise in 2019.

Over the past couple of decades one problem or another, whether disease outbreaks or exchange rate woes, has set back progress in the Brazilian shrimp industry.
