Bangladesh is looking to significantly increase its vannamei production from zero to 30,000 metric tons in the next three years, after the government gave the greenlight to start farming the species earlier this year.

Bangladesh’s shrimp production reached 137,000 metric tons in 2022, with black tiger shrimp accounting for 70,219 metric tons of this. Freshwater scampi accounted for 54,352 metric tons, with wild-catch making up the other 12,450 metric tons.

But now the country is keen to jump on the vannamei bandwagon, despite it being an already crowded market.
