The UK government says it will press for the speedier introduction of electronic export health certificates used to clear perishable salmon and other seafood exports through customs border points into the European Union.

The pledge follows a meeting between Victoria Prentis, minister of state at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), and salmon producers trade body Salmon Scotland, which has become increasingly concerned by delays at border points.

The onset of the main summer holiday season and heavier post pandemic weekend traffic in Britain has combined with the introduction of tighter checks on Britons entering the European Union, prompting delays that have dominated news headlines in Britain over past two weeks.
