Mowi's operations in western Canada are taking the brunt of a decision to shutter all netpen salmon farming operations in the Discovery Islands by next summer, but Grieg and Cermaq will also suffer financially.

Mowi said in its fourth quarter report it expects an overall annual loss in harvest volume of between 10,000 to 12,000 metric tons, and layoffs of up to 200 employees.

On the other hand, just one Grieg farm -- its Barnes Bay site -- will be impacted by the decision, and the closure is not likely to affect the company's total Canadian harvest volumes or employment levels, Grieg Seafood BC's Community Relations Specialist Katie Maximick told IntraFish.
