Nordic Aquafarms' land-based salmon subsidiary in Norway is considering producing yellowtail, or kingfish, instead of farmed salmon, citing a lack of profitability as the company scales up. Nordic's US operation, however, is moving full speed ahead with salmon.

Marianne Naess, executive vice president of Nordic Aquafarms, said the US market dynamics make salmon a far better bet.

"The kingfish market is not large enough to support the volume expansion plans we have in the United States," Naess told IntraFish.
