Mowi Canada East on Tuesday reported a mass die-off of more than 70,000 salmon at its Northern Harvest Sea Farms operation. It blamed the loss on a combination of sea lice, fish health treatments and prolonged rough weather at site.

The Deep Water Point site holds around 709,000 Atlantic salmon.

While the exact number of fish killed in the incident has yet to be confirmed by the company, the losses exceeded 10 percent, requiring Mowi to publicly report the die-off under Newfoundland and Labrador regulations.
