Norwegian salmon farmer SalMar reported a salmon escape on Jan. 16 in one of its Finnmark sites, after discovering a one-meter long tear in one of the nets.

The Directorate of Fisheries is inspecting the farm where the incident occurred. However, the extent of the escape has not been declared yet.

Fish in the Borvika site were of about two kilograms each.

In Norway alone, around 290,000 salmon escaped farms in 2019, which was a 44 percent increase from the year prior.
