Norway-based research center Nofima is researching the optimal size and time for releasing smolt into sea cages to ensure the greatest survival and growth of the salmon.

In Norway, the answer varies from facility to facility and from region to region, according to the research which was published last month.

"There is no common knowledge base regarding this aspect of salmon farming, as different facilities use different methods," Nofima Senior Researcher Trine Ytrestoyl said.

Researchers compared their findings with the farming industry in the Faroe Islands, which has more experience in releasing large smolt.
