An estimated 100,000 salmon were reported to have died at a Cooke Aquaculture salmon farm site in Maine in August following the company reporting uncommonly low oxygen levels in the cages.

Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) deputy commissioner David Madore told IntraFish on Tuesday that the number was first reported to his department following the incident.

The DEP has opened an enforcement case with Cooke since the incident, and Madore said the investigation into the matter is ongoing.
