A proposal to build and operate an open-ocean salmon farm off the south coast of New Zealand has been denied by an independent panel.

Ngai Tahu Seafood Resources Limited, whose parent company holds a 12.6 percent stake in seafood giant Sanford, applied for a fast-track consent to develop roughly 2,500 hectares off the northeastern coast of Stewart Island.

New Zealand salmon farmers have collectively been pushing for offshore farms for several years, as warming water temperatures make their nearshore operations less and less viable.
