New Figures released by salmon farming giant Mowi reveal the number of salmon lost last year at its eastern Canada operations is substantially higher than initially thought.

Under Newfoundland regulations, salmon farming companies are required to report "abnormal mortalities" exceeding 10 percent, though are not required to report exact figures at the time of the incident.

On Friday, the company reported finalized losses of 1.7 million fish in 2021, approximately 59 percent more than previous estimated losses based on the 10 percent reporting threshold.*
