Mowi lost 1.5 million salmon fry at its hatchery in Sandora near Skjervoy, Norway, from an unknown cause, reports Norwegian newspaper Nordlys.

"We are seriously looking at the incident, and are now working with several laboratories and suppliers to find the cause of the mortality," Mowi Communications Manager Eivind Naevdal-Bolstad wrote in an email to Nordlys. "The incident will not affect the company's smolt production."

The fish death occurred in early May and the Norwegian Food Safety Authority was notified of the case on May 6.

According to sources Nordlys spoke to, the fish in the RAS plant may have died from acute sulphur poisoning.
